A Cook County judge has passed a default judgment on a civil case in favor of a victim after R. Kelly failed to appear in court on April 24th.

    What We Know:

    • The young woman, known only as H.W., filed a lawsuit against R. Kelly on February 21, 2019 for sexual abuse that started in 1998 when she was 16.
    • R. Kelly received a court summons in March 2019 while in Cook County Jail on charges for back child support.
    • According to the woman’s lawyers, R. Kelly has consistently ignored their court summonses since the lawsuit was filed. “Robert Sylvester Kelly has failed and refused to file an appearance or answer to the complaint even though he is required to do so.”
    • In a conversation with the Chicago Sun-Times, R. Kelly’s publicist stated that “We don’t care about the lawsuit. The lawsuit means nothing to us.”
    • R. Kelly is also facing other charges regarding sexual allegations dating back to the 1990s. He is facing 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse against for 4 women. Three of these woman were minors at the time of the incidents.

It is estimated that R. Kelly will have to pay more than $50,000.00 in damages for the failed appearance. After H.W testifies in front of the judge in May and a final amount is set, the repayment will begin.
