ABC has passed on its drama pilot New York Undercover, a reboot of the 1990s Dick Wolf cop drama. It would’ve been Wolf’s first series on ABC since 2004, however, Universal TV is shopping it around.

    What We Know…

    • New York Undercover features original cast members Malik Yoba and Luna Lauren Velez. The reboot picks up 20 years after and will follow detectives Nat Gilmore and Melissa Ortiz—played by Otmara Marrero and Toby Sandeman—as they investigate the city’s most dangerous criminals from Harlem to Battery Park.
    • According to Deadline,  Universal TV is looking into both broadcast/cable networks and streaming platforms to pick up the show. However, Fox, the show’s original network, is likely among the outlets approached.
    • Despite most of Universal TV drama pilots getting picked up, the studio was disappointed when two of them didn’t, New York Undercover being one of them. According to Deadline, Universal TV has a record on 38 series on broadcast, cable and streaming.

The original series, which aired on Fox for four seasons between 1994-1998, starred Yoba and Michael DeLorenz0 which made it the first police drama on U.S. television to feature two people of color in leading roles.
