Severe flooding is putting thousands in danger.

    What We Know:

    • Heavy rainfall has caused several levees in Arkansas and Mississippi to breach. These levees are the only protection citizens have from flooding.
    • Several cities in both states have issued mandatory evacuations in response to the breached levees. Officials are continuing to monitor water levels and are directing citizens accordingly.

    • Emergency responders have been boating stranded people to safe locations. They have also been attempting to build barriers to prevent water from spreading further.
    • An analysis done by CNN found that the flooding could affect thousands of homes along the Arkansas River. Water levels are expected to rise to 40.5 feet, the highest it has ever been.
    • The Arkansas River is a tributary in the Mississippi River. The flooding has affected residents in both states.

    • Arkansas and Missouri have declared states of emergency due to the severe flooding.

The situation is still being monitored. For more updates, visit The National Weather Service.
