Trump’s UK visit starts off with a lack of diplomatic etiquette

President Donald Trump and his family are on a three day trip to the United Kingdom.

    What We Know:

    • Prior to his arrival on June 3rd, Trump has made negative remarks regarding the UK and the royal family. There is a certain etiquette that is expected to be followed and Trump broke some of those rules.
    • In an interview with The Sun, Trump remarked on Megan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex. Megan has called Trump misogynistic in the past. In the recorded interview with The Sun, Trump stated “I didn’t know she was nasty”. He later denied calling Megan “nasty’ despite being recorded.
    • Trump has also had an ongoing feud with London Mayor Sadiq Khan. In a column in “The Observer” newspaper, Khan stated that it would be “un-British to roll out the red carpet” for Trump because is behavior “flies in the face of the ideals America was founded on — equality, liberty, and religious freedom”. Trump responded by tweeting, “he is a stone cold loser who should focus on crime in London , not me”.
    • According to royal writer Robert Hardman, Trump tried to make up for his negative remarks on his visit to the Buckingham Palace. Hardman said Trump was “absolutely determined to not put a foot wrong” during the tour and that  he was “listening very intently as the Queen showed him round”.
    • The official royal family website states that there are no “obligatory codes of behavior” when greeting but there are”traditional” manners. One of the main manners is addressing the Queen as “Your Majesty” at first, filled by “Ma’am”.
    • Trump and his family are aware of the volume of rules they are expected to follow when at the Buckingham Palace. First Lady Melania Trump’s deputy chief of staff, Stephanie Grisham, advised that she spent a lot of time preparing for the trip.

#DearUK” is currently trending on Twitter as Americans apologize for the president’s behavior.
