‘When They See Us’ Racks Up 16 Emmy Nominations

The 71st annual Emmy Awards are set to take place September 22 on Fox and the Netflix hit, When They See Us has 16 nominations.

    What We Know:

    • When They See Us, Ava DuVernay’s portrayal of the story of the Central Park Five, racked up 16 Emmy nominations this year, including Outstanding Limited Series. Actors Ken Jeong and D’Arcy Carden served as the announcers for the Television Academy in revealing the nominees, according to Madame Noire.
    • Actors Jharrel Jerome, Anjanue Ellis and Niecy Nash who portrayed Korey Wise, Sharon Salaam (mother of Yusef Salaam), and Delores Wise (Korey Wise’s mother), were all nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor and Actress in a Limited Series or Movie.
    • “I just finished crying,” Jerome told The Eagle in a phone interview from a New York restaurant where he, his manager, and several friends had gathered to monitor the announcements for this year’s Emmys. Jerome spent a significant amount of time with Wise in order to portray him correctly onscreen and many say that Jerome did him justice.
    • The docu-series garnered a lot of support and stirred some issues for the prosecutors of the case at that time.

You can read the full list of nominees here.
