According to the Producers Guild of America, Oscar-award-winning actress, Octavia Spencer will receive the Guild’s Visionary Award.

    What We Know:

    • The Guild’s Visionary Award is awarded to producers “who share inspiring, uplifting stories that add unique value to society and culture”. Spencer will be honored with the award at the 31st annual PGA Awards on January 18, 2020 at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles.
    • “As both an actor and as a producer, Octavia has provided her keen vision to an array of poignant stories across drama, comedy and everything in between,” said PGA presidents Gail Berman and Lucy Fisher. “She understands how to harness the power of film-making to inspire audiences everywhere with stories that showcase undeniable human truths and emotion.”
    • “It is an honor to receive the PGA Visionary Award,” said Spencer. “From the very beginning of my career in entertainment, I have been guided by my dream to create an impact through storytelling. This is an incredible highlight for me, and I extend my deepest thanks to the PGA for this award.”
    • Spencer is a native of Montgomery, Alabama and is the sixth of seven siblings. She holds a BS in Liberal Arts from Auburn University. According to Spencer, she knew she wanted to work in the film industry someday, but never dreamed it would be in front of the camera. She landed her first role in 1995, alongside Sandra Bullock in the hit film A Time To Kill.
    • In April 2009, she was named one of the “25 Funniest Actresses in Hollywood” by Entertainment Weekly. Then in 2011, Spencer racked up by winning the Critic’s Choice Award, earning a Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild, BAFTA, and an Oscar all in the same year.
    • Spencer’s career stretches well over 20 years and she has given her all in roles that have made us laugh and left us no choice but to connect with her in some way. Some of her most notable roles were in The Help, Hidden Figures, Gifted, Black or White and we recently had the chance to see her portrayed in a way we had not seen before in Ma.

Previous recipients of the award include Brad Pitt, Ava DuVernay and black-ish creator Kenya Barris.
