The US has been closely monitoring reports on Kim’s health out of geopolitical concerns of major migration out of North Korea if Kim passes away.
What We Know:
- The Kim family dynasty has ruled over North Korea since the end of Japanese rule in 1945.
- Kim recently missed the celebration of his grandfather’s birthday on April 15, which raised speculation about his well-being. He had been seen four days before that at a government meeting.
- According to intelligence reports, “the concerns about Kim’s health are credible but the severity is hard to assess”.
- North Korea is one of the most secluded countries in the world, and as a closed society it is difficult to gain definite intelligence.
- Later on Tuesday, a US defense official said that the US military assessment is that while they are examining reports regarding Kim’s poor health, the evidence at this point does not suggest he is incapacitated.

Daily NK, an online newspaper based in South Korea that focuses on North Korea, reports that Kim reportedly received a cardiovascular system procedure on April 12.

Kim received the cardiovascular system procedure because of “excessive smoking, obesity, and overwork,” according to the news site, and is now receiving treatment in a villa in Hyangsan County.
In a press conference on Tuesday, Donald Trump wished him well. North Korea is one of 9 countries in the world with ballistic nuclear weapons.
