Anderson Cooper has recently made the surprising announcement that he’s a father! The 52-year-old CNN news anchor announced live on-air Thursday that he welcomed son Wyatt Morgan Cooper via surrogate on Monday at 7 pounds 2 ounces.
What We Know:
- Cooper shared pictures of his newborn with followers on Instagram, revealing that his son’s moniker is a tribute to his late father, Wyatt Emory Cooper. “He’s named after my dad, who died when I was 10 years old. I hope I can be as good a dad as he was.”
- “On Monday, I became a father,” Cooper said. “I’ve never actually said that before, and it still kind of astonishes me. I am a dad. I have a son and I want you to meet him.”
- Baby Wyatt’s middle name, Morgan, also holds special meaning. Cooper said it descends from the family tree of his mother Gloria Vanderbilt, who died last year. And more importantly, the middle name is grandparent approved.
- Cooper went onto say “As a gay kid, I never thought it would be possible to have a child, and I’m grateful for all those who have paved the way, and for the doctors and nurses and everyone involved in my son’s birth.”
- He also made his appreciation of his surrogate know. “She has a beautiful family of her own, a wonderfully supportive husband, and kids, and I am incredibly thankful of all the support they have given Wyatt and me. My family is blessed to have this family in our lives.”
Cooper said he wishes his family, all of whom have died, were around to share in this new chapter in his life: “I do wish my mom and dad and my brother, Carter, were alive to meet Wyatt, but I like to believe they can see him. I imagine them all together, arms around each other, smiling and laughing, happy to know that their love is alive in me and in Wyatt, and that our family continues.”
