The Oprah Winfrey Network announced on Easter Sunday that the fifth season of the NAACP award winning drama Greenleaf will return in June 2020. OWN also released a first – listen clip of the all-original new recording of “Going Up Yonder” by Grammy Award-winning gospel artist Tramaine Hawkins.
What We Know:
- The drama, about a black family running a Memphis megachurch, has been a solid performer for OWN, especially among African American women. Over the past four years, it was shot in metro Atlanta and for the first two seasons it featured Oprah Winfrey in a recurring role.
- In season five, the Greenleaf’s attempt to maintain a united front in the face of losing their church to Bob Whitmore and Harmony and Hope Ministries, but secrets from past and present create what could be fatal fractures in the family’s fragile foundation. Greenleaf stars Merle Dandridge as Grace Greenleaf; Keith David as Bishop James Greenleaf; Lynn Whitfield as Lady Mae Greenleaf; Kim Hawthorne as Kerissa Greenleaf; Lamman Rucker as Jacob Greenleaf; and Deborah Joy Winans as Charity Greenleaf-Satterjee.
The final season will start airing in June though OWN did not provide an exact date. The trailer OWN released provides no specific plot details on how season five will unfold.
