Walt Disney has pledged to to donate $5 million to social justice nonprofits starting with donating $2 million to the NAACP. This comes after the murder of George Floyd on Memorial Day after being pulled over and disspirited by police.

    What We Know:

    • The other $3 million will go to other social justice nonprofits.
    • Disney says its goal is to “further their longstanding work promoting social justice by eliminating disparities and racial discrimination thruugh their advocacy and education programs”.
    • The company has worked with groups that advocate for and empower communities of color. They have also donated millions of dollars in grants to help students from underrepresented groups attend college.
    • A statement was released by Disney’s CEO Bob Chepak stating, “The killing of George Floyd has forced our nation to once again confront the long history of injustice that black people in America have suffered, and it is critical that we stand together, speak out and do everything in our power to ensure that acts of racism and violence are never tolerated. This $5 million pledge will continue to support the efforts of nonprofit organizations such as the NAACP that have worked tirelessly to ensure equality and justice.”
    • Disney allows its employees to contribute to donating to charitable programs through its Matching Gifts program.
    • Other companies such as Bad Robert, run by the director of Star Wars, joins with Katie McGrath and J.J. Abrams Family FOundation and pledges to donate $10 million over the next five years in efforts to being a just American for all.

On Tuesday, Disney aired America In Pain: What Comes Next? an NBC primetime special that took a further look into the ongoing protests in America revolving the death of George Floyd. This comes just a week after George Floyd was violently killed in the hands of Minneapolis police officers.
