Journalist and TV writer Jas Waters, 39, known as a staff writer for This is Us and Kidding has died recently.

    What We Know

    • Jas Water, known to be a staff writer for This is Us and Kidding has died today. This was confirmed on Twitter from the This is Us writers Twitter account.
    • “The entire #ThisIsUs family was devastated to learn of Jas Waters passing,” the statement read. “In our time together, Jas left her mark on us and ALL over the show. She was a brilliant storyteller and a force of nature. We send our deepest sympathies to her loved ones. She was one of us. RIP @JasFly.”
    • Waters was a talented writer who began her career with Vibe as a hip-hop writer. Eventually, her hard work paid off and success came her way when her talents landed her to write for What Women Want, a film led by Taraji P. Henson, the second season of This is Us, Hood Adjacent With James Davis, Kidding, and The Breaks.

    Jas Waters

    • She was passionate about her work and even shared in an interview with Shadow and Act about how she became a screenwriter.
    • “From the moment I got here, the rules didn’t apply to me,” she said. “If the basic rules of raising a kid didn’t apply to me, then nothing else really applies to me. So I just had to figure it out. There were several times in my life that I found to be very confining. But as I look back on it, it was very freeing.”
    • A lot of members of the hip-hop community and peers of Waters, like the creator of This Is Us Dan Fogelman, went to Twitter to express their sadness and to send their love, thoughts, and prayers to her loved ones.
    • “This news took my breath away,” the statement said. “Jas was absolutely brilliant and had so many stories still to tell. She made an indelible mark on our show and my heart breaks for her loved ones. RIP @JasFly.”

Jas Waters will be highly missed by many and our thoughts and prayers are with her family and loved ones.

I am a third-year Journalism major at Florida A&M University (Go Rattlers!), I am originally from Fort Lauderdale, FL, and I am an Intern at BNA. I previously wrote for the FAMUAN, Journey Magazine, and Society19, and am grateful to be writing for BNA, an experience I love and appreciate. I grew up listening to all kinds of music but mainly Gospel, Country, and Rock. One thing I can promise readers, I will continue to work hard to get the information you want and need out.
