In the wake of protests in regards to George Floyd’s death, Netflix has decided to create a list of content to educate viewers about blackness in America.

    What We Know:

    • On Wednesday, Netlfix created a collection of TV shows and movies for subscribers to watch that talk about “racial injustice and Black experience in America”. The collection is in support of Black Lives Matter and is more accessible to viewers who are interested in learning more about the movement.
    • In a statement, Netflix said, “When we say ‘Black Lives Matter,’ we also mean ‘Black storytelling matters’. With an understanding that out commitment to true, systematic change will take time – we’re starting by highlighting powerful an complex narratives about the Black experience.”

    • A few of the shows in the collection are Orange Is the New Black, Dear White People, Pose, and Beyonce’s Homecoming. Movies included in the collection include Denzel Washington’s Malcomn X, Moonlight and Spike Lee’s She’s Gotta Have It. Emmy-winning director, Ava DuVernay also has her projects featured in the colelction. They include 13th, When They See Us and Selma. These films and docuseries detail the American jail system and what it’s like to be Black in America.
    • Many movies about racial injustice have not been released on Netlfix but are available for rent elsewhere in order to reach larger audiences. These movies include The Hate You Give, Brian Banks, The Secret Life of Bees and Antwone Fisher.

Those who log into their Netlfix accounts will be welcomed with a different visual. The collection is titled “More Than A Movement” and viewers can decide to dismiss it or go through the colleciton. Hulu has also decided to “fight against the injustice” and support the Black Lives Matter movement.
