Joy Reid’s MSNBC Show ‘The ReidOut’ debuts at No. 1

MSNBC’s Joy Reid debuted her show, ‘The ReidOut’ and it has already debuted at number 1, knocking her 7 p.m. time slot competition under the table.

    What We Know:

    • Reid previously worked weekends on MSNBC and is now doing prime time during the week with her new show, ‘The ReidOut’, which is more political. On the first episode of her show, she featured Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, former Attorney General Loretta Lynch, presidential candidate Joe Biden, and former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
    • Reid asked Biden, the Democratic presidential nominee, if he was considering a Black woman as his vice-president. Biden did not give her an answer but did imply that he has not committed to a running mate at this time, noting that at least four black women are potential candidates.

    • According to all of the guests on her show, Reid is a very skilled interviewer, and they say she is standing on the shoulders of ancestors, including John Lewis. Reid says, “I’m trying to channel Gwen Ifill’s spirit, my mother’s spirit, and the ancestors’ spirit. Growing up, watching the news, and being a news junkie, I was being told what the world was about by almost exclusively white men.”
    • Elliot Williams posted on Instagram, acknowledging the diversity we see with Reid’s new show. Reid reposted the post encouraging all Black girls to stand up.

The success of Reid’s new show comes only a few days after the show’s airing on July 20. According to theGrio, Reid and the network have made history twice this week with Reid being the first African American woman to have a primetime weekday show and by scoring the 2nd highest rating for any regularly scheduled program on MSNBC.
