The annual Christmas Spectacular Starring, the Radio City Rockettes show, is canceled due to concerns about COVID-19.
What We Know:
- The Rockettes are known as “Americon” icons and even performed at the inauguration of the 43rd president of the United States, George W. Bush, in 2001. The guidelines to be a Rockette are specific; you must be between 5’6 ″ and 5’10 ½” tall (measurements will be taken in stocking feet). Rockettes candidates must be proficient in ballet, tap, and jazz.
- The Christmas Spectacular has not been canceled since it began in 1933. The canceling of the show was not a surprise due to the fact that the Broadway world was in a blackout, meaning the theaters had no performances and shows.
- According to the Rockettes official website,
“We regret that the 2020 production of the Christmas Spectacular Starring the Radio City Rockettes® presented by Chase has been canceled due to continued uncertainty associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. We are disappointed for everyone involved with the show, as well as for the many fans who make the Christmas Spectacular a cherished part of their holiday tradition. We look forward to welcoming audiences back for the 2021 production, which is on sale now. All tickets for the 2020 production will be automatically refunded at the point of purchase.”
- The show was scheduled to run from Nov. 6 to Jan. 3 at Radio City Music Hall. The Rockettes go on a Christmas tour during those months, but train all year to deliver the best show for their audience. In many families, the Christmas Spectacular show is a Christmas family tradition. People travel far and wide to see the show.
The 2021 production is predicted to happen as of now, and the tickets are on sale and available for purchase. The announcement to cancel is evidence that the coronavirus pandemic is a concern for the near future as well.
