Bishop Rance Allen of The Rance Allen Group has passed away at age 71.
What We Know:
- The Church of God in Christ (COGIC) posted their transitional announcement letter on Facebook this morning announcing Bishop Allen’s passing, though a cause is unknown at this time. Allen served as the pastor of New Bethel Church Of God In Christ in Toledo, Ohio, and was ordained a bishop in 2011.
- Due to his years of service, beginning his preaching ministry at age five and licensed to preach by age twelve, Allen was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Divinity in 1995
- Allen was not only a bishop, but a world-renowned gospel artist considered the “father of contemporary gospel music.” He formed The Rance Allen Group in 1969 in Detroit with his brothers. As the leader of this talented music group and as a featured artist, Allen has performed with other gospel greats including Shirley Caesar, Kirk Franklin, Marvin Sapp, The Clark Sisters, and many more. The group recently released their first Christmas song since 1978 and Allen was actively performing and serving in the church.
- Born in 1948 in Monroe, Michigan to parents Thomas and Emma Pearl Allen, Allen had 11 siblings total. He was married to Ellen Marie Groves in 1970 and had no children.
