*The rap world is mourning the loss of Bo$$, whose untimely death at age 54 has shocked fans and fellow artists alike.

Bo$$ was the first female rapper to sign with Def Jam and is best known for her only studio album, “Born Gangstaz,”  released in 1993 and featuring the singles “Deeper” and “Recipe of a Hoe.”

Boss (born Lichelle Marie Laws) left an indelible impression with her potent lyrics and pioneering role in the predominantly male hip-hop landscape of the early 1990s. The record label confirmed news of her passing with a statement Tuesday.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Lichelle Marie Laws, also known as Bo$$,” the statement on Instagram read. “Bo$$ will be remembered as a pioneer in hip hop, being one of the first female rappers signed to Def Jam in the early 1990’s. We extend our prayers and condolences to her family and loved ones during this difficult time.”

Details about her death are not widely known, but Billboard reports that Bo$$ struggled with various health issues throughout the years, which included renal disease and a stroke in 2017.

Several fans and artists have paid tribute to her on social media.

Hip-hop pioneer Kurtis Blow wrote to his Instagram: ” The Hip Hip Hip Alliance is saddened by the passing of our Beloved ‘BO$$.’ First Detroit Female Gangsta rapper signed to Def Jam. She will never be forgotten and will live in our hearts forever. We send our sincere condolences to her family, friends, Detroit, and the entire world. RIP legend.”

Rapper Bun B shared a photo of Bo$$ with the caption: “Rest in peace to my big sis Lichelle Laws AKA Boss. One of the best female MCs and a dear friend. Give Rick Royal a hug for me. Long Live The Org!”

DJ Premier revealed he and Bo$$ created a remix for “Deeper,” but Def Jam never released it.

“Back in 1993 she came to D&D and recut her vocals to my beat. It was so RAW,” he shared on Instagram. “We had a good session drinking 40’s, puffin Lah, and vibing.”

He added, “Can someone at Def Jam find that in the Vaults? I want a copy of that Remix. Sleep Peacefully Queen. Shit was mad real.”
