Developers broke ground in late February on the $4.2 billion project that will house a new international terminal for New York City-based airline JetBlue. The new space, known as Terminal 6, will open in 2026.
The new terminal is set to come to John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in Queens, and developers have promised a “state-of-the-art” design.
Connecting The Old And New
The airline’s new terminal will modernize its space at JFK. It will include more than 100,000 square feet of dining and shopping, 10 new gates, touch-less check-in, and biometrics-based technology for security and other facets.
Travelers can expect restaurants, new airport lounges, retail, and ample waiting areas, among other details.
In addition to more gates and increased flights to and from New York, the new terminal will also house JetBlue’s partner airline connections.
Growth And Job Creation
According to JetBlue’s, the new 1.2 million-square-foot terminal will help create 4,000 jobs; 1,800 of which will be in construction, and produce nearly $2 billion in direct wages.
JetBlue launched its first flight 23 years ago from JFK. Today, they send customers to more than 80 destinations, including London and soon Paris.
“At a time that JetBlue is set to grow significantly, we are excited to once again invest and further the governor’s vision as we build the new Terminal 6,” JetBlue’s CEO said.
“As we move JFK into the future with a new, state-of-the-art, customer-focused facility, we are so pleased to have an opportunity to expand our presence with new gates in a new terminal.”
Terminal 6’s completion will happen in two phases: one part in 2026 by the opening, and the rest in 2028.
