*(CNN) — Nathan Wade, the prosecutor leading the election subversion case against Donald Trump and his allies in Georgia stepped down following a scathing ruling from the Fulton County judge overseeing the criminal case, according to a letter obtained by CNN.

Wade wrote to Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis that he was “proud of the work our team has accomplished in investigating, indicting, and litigating this case.”

“I am offering my resignation in the interest of democracy, in dedication to the American public, and to move this case forward as quickly as possible,” Wade wrote in his resignation letter.

Willis accepted the resignation on Friday, praising Wade for his “courage to accept the role, even though (he) did not seek it.”

Judge Scott McAfee ruled the romance created an appearance of a conflict of interest, insisting that the entire district attorney’s office must be sidelined unless Wade leaves.

With the departure, Trump’s election interference case can now move ahead, though a trial date has not yet been set.
