    These Are The World’s Most Drunken Countries – Travel Noire

    Drinking alcohol is a timeless tradition that knows no boundaries, cultures, or periods. However, the way people consume it, the crazy things it leads to, and the havoc it wreaks on health, well, that’s a whole different story depending on which country you’re in.

    While some travelers seek out the world’s most beautiful landscapes or ancient ruins, others might be intrigued by how different cultures enjoy their tipple. Here’s a guide to the world’s most drunken countries, according to The World Health Organization data. 

    1. Latvia – The High-Spirited Baltic Nation

    With an average consumption of approximately 13.19 liters of pure alcohol per capita per year, Latvia leads the pack. The northern European country, known for its distinct culture and beautiful landscapes, also has a prominent drinking culture.

    2. Moldova – The Grape-loving Nation

    Situated between Romania and Ukraine, Moldova has a rich history of winemaking, which contributes to its high alcohol consumption, which averages 12.85 liters per capita annually. Moldovans also experiment with unique local beverages, adding to the diversity of their spirits scene.

    3. Germany – The Beer Haven

    Germany, with an average consumption of 12.79 liters per capita, is synonymous with beer. The country’s Southeastern state of Bavaria, in particular, is a beer enthusiast’s paradise. The iconic Oktoberfest, held annually in Munich, attracts beer fans from across the globe, endorsing Germany’s love for the bubbly beverage.

    4. Lithuania – The Baltic Boozer

    Lithuania, Latvia’s southern neighbor, is another Baltic state with a thriving drinking culture. Lithuanians consume an average of 12.78 liters per capita annually. Beer is a popular choice, but locals also enjoy a variety of mead known as Midus and Stakliškės and rye-based liquors.

    Ireland has a deep-seated drinking tradition with an average consumption of 12.75 liters per capita. The Irish pub is a cultural institution, and the world-renowned Guinness beer is a national treasure.

    6. Spain – The Wine Wonderland

    Spaniards, with an average consumption of 12.67 liters per capita, view alcohol as an essential accompaniment to their meals. While wine is a staple, the refreshing sangria and slender glasses of cerveza (beer) are equally celebrated.

    7. Uganda – The African Surprise

    Uganda, the only non-European country in the top 10, has an average consumption of 12.48 liters per capita. The East African nation enjoys a variety of traditional drinks like Malwa, brewed from millet and maize, and banana-based beverages such as Tonto and Mwenge Bigere.

    8. Bulgaria – The Rakija Republic

    Bulgaria, another European country with high alcohol consumption levels, averages 12.46 liters per capita. Locals prefer Rakija, a collective term for fruit brandies popular across the Balkans, and enjoy a mix of fine wines and light beers.

    9. Luxembourg – The Grand Drunk Duchy

    Despite its small size, Luxembourg has an impressive average alcohol consumption of 12.45 liters per capita. The country displays a taste for wine and beer, akin to its French and German neighbors, respectively.

    10. Romania – The Carpathian Carouser

    Romania completes the top ten list with an average consumption of 12.34 liters per capita. Romanians enjoy a variety of drinks, including their traditional plum brandy, Tuica.
