With New Orleans hosting the 2025 Super Bowl game, travelers are wondering what other sports tourism gems the Big Easy has to offer. It’s no secret that NOLA is home to dedicated sports lovers. From NBA and professional football games to college sporting events, the city has a little bit of everything going on when it comes to exciting sports opportunities.

Although the city isn’t hosting the Super Bowl until next year, there are plenty of things for sports-loving travelers to enjoy. Throughout 2024, multiple professional and college teams are gearing up for games, events, and more. Here are a few ways to experience sports tourism when visiting New Orleans before Super Bowl LIX.

On February 9, 2025, the NFL Super Bowl is taking over New Orleans. Travelers from all over the country will flock to the city to enjoy another tournament from America’s favorite game. This isn’t the first time New Orleans has hosted the event. The game has been held in the city’s Ceasar Superdome 10 times, making next year its eleventh hosting.

Fans are already anticipating which teams will compete next year and the halftime performer. Many are speculating about a performance from Lil Wayne. However, nothing has been confirmed by the NFL. Whoever hits the field, Super Bowl LIX is guaranteed to be one of the top sports tourism events of 2025.

If you’re visiting New Orleans in the latter part of the year, an NFL football game should top your list. The Super Bowl only visits the city every once in a while. However, the New Orleans Saints team plays football all season long. This is perfect for travelers seeking out professional sporting events while in the city. The Saints have a huge fanbase so the games have plenty of energy and high vibes. NFL games are always a high note for traveling sports lovers and New Orleans is one place you can check one out.

For folks who prefer college sports over professional games, New Orleans has a few colleges and universities with games throughout the year. Different schools have different athletic programs so it’s important to do some research before just heading out to a game. If you’re a football fan, consider attending a football game at Tulane University. HBCU Xavier University of Louisiana has its own athletic program featuring students playing basketball, baseball, and more. Depending on what’s your favorite sport, you should be able to find a college game in New Orleans.

The Bayou Classic is a historic college football game that happens every year. The event began in 1974 and happens in New Orleans every Thanksgiving weekend. The sports showdown is between Grambling State University and Southern University. Every year, thousands of travelers visit New Orleans to attend the event. In addition to the rivalry game, there are plenty of parties, festivities, and even a Battle of the Bands between both schools.
