Visiting New York City can feel like traveling to a land of its own. The city is so characteristically unique, down to its people, culture, fashion, food and more. Many struggle with what to wear in NYC to fit in amongst the locals and not look like a lost tourist in the city that never sleeps. There is nothing wrong with being a tourist, but immersing yourself in NYC starts with living like a local, and to play the part, you have to dress the part. Here are some tips for what to wear in NYC to give you the similar swag of a New York native.

Spoiler: New York City is a place where fashion is prioritized just as much as functionality. Everything in fashion is about what works best to walk around the city in. Additionally, it is about being comfortable while ready for whatever events the city can take you to. You will also find that New Yorkers really do love their black, and layering is pretty much always key.

    General NYC Fashion Guidelines

What you should wear in New York City largely depends on the time of year and the activities you’ll be engaging in. Here’s a general guide:

    General Clothing

New Yorkers tend to dress stylishly and practically. Casual wear like jeans, t-shirts, and sneakers are common for everyday activities. However, these simple outfits are often paired with sunhats, accessories, a colorful blazer, classic leather jacket or other statement piece to give that outfit the extra flair the city is known for.

    Footwear

Comfortable shoes are a must, especially if you plan to walk a lot. Sneakers, boots or comfortable flats are always good choices for what to wear in NYC. Invest in a good pair of sneakers or other kinds of walking shoes if you plan to spend a longer time there or really want to nail the native New Yorker look.

    Accessories

A good bag or backpack for carrying essentials is important, especially if you’ll be out exploring all day. Fanny packs are a popular and practical trend but it may target you as a local if that matters to you. NYC weather can be unpredictable, so it’s also a good idea to have an umbrella handy, especially in spring and summer.

    Specific Activities

For what to wear in NYC to visit museums, galleries or theaters consider bringing something slightly dressier. Many New Yorkers wear these outfits on the regular in order to be prepared for any events that require them to be dressed as such. This is a part of the reason for the city’s high-fashion reputation, besides it being a major fashion capital. For outdoor activities like Central Park or walking tours on the other hand, dress comfortably and appropriately for the weather.

What To Wear in NYC Based on Seasonal Considerations

Ultimately, New York City is a diverse and dynamic place, so there’s no one-size-fits-all answer to what you should wear. Looking like a local does not really matter as long as you are comfortable and feel good, though it is fun to adapt to the city’s style. Besides dressing comfortably for the activities you have planned, here are some weather guidelines to consider.

    Spring (March to May)

Spring in NYC is characterized by gradually warming temperatures. Average temperatures range from around 40°F (4°C) in March to 70°F (21°C) in May. Spring sees a mix of sunny days, occasional rain showers and sometimes even late-season snowfalls in March. Basically, temperatures can vary, so layering is key. Bring a light jacket or sweater for cooler mornings and evenings. Comfortable shoes for walking can range from cool sneakers to a sturdy pair of boots with varying weather.

    Summer (June to August)

Summers in NYC are typically hot and humid, so lightweight and breathable clothing is best. Though the high heats persist, you still will likely not see native New Yorkers in athletic shorts and flip-flops. (This is jarring if you live elsewhere, especially the South.) Instead, casual shirts, flowy skirts, sundresses, rompers, tank tops and sandals are popular choices. This is so they can be ready for anything like a casual picnic in the afternoon and then a swanky dinner in the evening. Average temperatures range from around 70°F (21°C) in June to 80°F (27°C) in August, with occasional heat waves pushing temperatures above 90°F (32°C), so do not forget sunglasses and sunscreen. Summer is also the rainiest season, with frequent thunderstorms. Everyone will have their umbrellas so make sure you have secured yours as well.

    Fall (September to November)

Fall in NYC brings cooler temperatures and colorful foliage. Average temperatures range from around 70°F (21°C) in September to 50°F (10°C) in November. Similar to spring, temperatures fluctuate. Bring layers such as sweaters, light jackets, blazers and scarves. Comfortable shoes are still important. Fall is also generally drier than summer, with clear skies and crisp air, although occasional rain showers are still possible. Your umbrella is safe to have but a stylish raincoat could also do the trick.

    Winter (December to February)

Winters in NYC are notoriously cold and can be snowy. Average temperatures range from around 40°F (4°C) in December to 30°F (-1°C) in February, with occasional periods of colder temperatures and snowstorms. Snowfall is common, especially in January and February, although snow accumulation can vary greatly from year to year. Layers are back again at number one for what to wear in NYC. Bring a sturdy warm coat, hat, gloves and scarf. Layering is also a good way to look like you belong, especially for those who are not used to the cold but do not want to pile on the jackets. Good leather boots or other sturdy materials are perfect for the cold and icy ground when you’re walking from block to block.
