BookTok is TikTok’s unofficial reading community. Made up of book critics, causal readers, and even literary professionals, the community is diverse with all kinds of readers. The sub-community shares book recommendations for people who prefer fantasy, crime, romance, and other specific types of stories. Some books even have a travel aspect to fuel your wanderlust. The main character might be on vacation or the story’s setting makes readers want to visit.

Here are five destinations worth visiting inspired by popular BookTok recommendations.

Blood Debts | New Orleans, Louisiana

Shaheim Williams is a professor, literature aficionado, and a huge participant in Black BookTok. He often shares must-reads from his classroom as well as his personal library. One book he recommends to anyone interested in Black speculative fiction is “Blood Debts” by TJ Benton Walker.

The story’s setting is New Orleans, Louisiana, which mentions many aspects of culture in the Big Easy. New Orleans is a destination famous for its food and culture. The city is home to many great Creole and Southern-style restaurants and also hosts many festivals throughout that year that attract visitors. The Jazz Festival, multiple music festivals, and Mardi Gras are all part of the city’s allure.

You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty | Montego Bay, Jamaica

This book by Awaeze Emezi first rose to BookTok fame in 2022 but has since resurfaced every few months as users discover the unique and unpredictable story. The book centers around a woman who falls in love with someone she isn’t supposed to, and the fallout from it.

A good portion of the story takes place in an unnamed Caribbean destination that sounds similar to Jamaica. Jamaica is one of the most popular Caribbean islands for tourists and is popular for its ample all-inclusive hotels and things to do. From climbing the river falls to sunset cruises and cliff jumping, Jamaica has a little something to suit any traveler.

    Maame | London, United Kingdom

Another TikTok-approved book is “Maame,” a novel by Jessica George. The story revolves around a late bloomer who’s ready to leave the nest and what keeps her home. It’s set in present-day London and can make many readers want to plan a trip to the U.K.

London is a popular summer travel destination and a great option for people looking for more of a city vibe. In addition to countless landmarks, like Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, Tower Bridge, and more, London is also home to other landmarks. The city offers restaurants, concert venues, and a vibrant shopping scene.

Children of Blood & Bone | Lagos, Nigeria

Tomi Adeyemi’s “Children of Blood & Bone” is the first of a three-part series that constantly makes BookTok’s recommendation list. The story is set in a fictional country known as Oriisha, a setting reminiscent of a years past version of West Africa.

The camaraderie, character descriptions, and settings feel like a postcard from the continent. “Children of Blood & Bone” can make any reader want to visit the Motherland, and Lagos, Nigeria is about as close as you’ll get.

Lagos is known for its music, food, and nightlife. The major Nigerian city has both budget and luxury accommodations and lots to do. It’s a cultural destination that many people describe as unforgettable.

Only for the Week | Tulum, Mexico

“Only for the Week” by Natasha Bishop has been a recent trending topic among Black BookTok. One resounding voice in the conversation was Talia, @taliacadet on TikTok, who boasts various daily lists on the platform.

“Not liking ‘Only for the Week’ is a character flaw,’” the TikTok user said. She goes on to describe the importance of consuming Black romance novels and how enjoyable it’s been for her.

The book centers around a wedding happening in Tulum, Mexico. Though the story has lots of ups and downs, the setting is a place worthy of being on any bucket list. Tulum has history, architecture, food, nightlife and more. It’s also home to several new luxury accommodations and is well-known for its affordable vacation rentals.
