It is with profound sadness that we report the passing of Grammy-nominated R&B singer, songwriter, and producer Angie Stone at the age of 63. According to her representative Deborah R. Champagne, Stone tragically lost her life in a car crash early Saturday morning while returning from a performance in Montgomery, Alabama.

Born Angela Laverne Brown on December 18, 1961, in Columbia, South Carolina, Stone’s musical journey began in the church choir.

With a career spanning over four decades, Angie Stone’s impact on R&B and soul music is undeniable. In her early days, Stone was a member of the pioneering hip-hop trio The Sequence. Their hit “Funk You Up” became one of the first rap records released by a female group.

As a solo artist with classic albums like Black Diamond and Mahogany Soul, Stone’s voice became the soundtrack to love, resilience, and Black excellence. Her signature songs, including No More Rain (In This Cloud) and Wish I Didn’t Miss You, remain timeless anthems that spoke to the soul of a generation. Not to mention songs of empowerment like “Brotha,” with lyrics such as “Black brother, I love ya.”

Stone’s three Grammy nominations stand as testament to her artistic excellence, while her influence extends far beyond award recognition. As a songwriter and producer, she helped shape the sound of modern R&B, working behind the scenes with numerous artists while maintaining her own distinctive voice.

    Beyond the Music

Beyond her musical contributions, Stone was known for her authenticity, resilience, and unwavering commitment to artistic integrity. Stone was a force in the industry – a songwriter for legends, an actress, and a mentor to many. She infused her work with honesty, passion, and a depth that resonated deeply with fans across the world. Her journey through the music industry – navigating its evolving landscapes while staying true to her soulful roots – inspired countless artists who followed in her footsteps.

Stone was a mother, and an advocate, using her platform to address issues affecting the Black community. As news of Stone’s passing reverberates through the music community, artists and fans alike have begun sharing tributes to her profound impact. The fact that she was actively performing until her final day speaks to her enduring passion for music and connection with her audience.

Stone leaves behind her daughter Diamond (with ex-partner D’Angelo), her son Michael, and a global community of fans who found solace, joy, and reflection in her music.

At BlackAlerts, we extend our deepest condolences to Angie Stone’s family, friends, and fans worldwide. Her voice may be silenced, but her musical legacy will continue to resonate for generations to come.
