Weather forecasters predict a large portion of the United States will experience winter conditions and storms this week, bringing Arctic cold, snow, and ice, particularly over the weekend.

On January 20, the National Weather Service’s (NWS) Weather Prediction Center shared that “confidence continues to increase” regarding the prevalence of a large-scale winter storm that will hit “much of the southern and eastern portions of the country” between Friday, January 23, and Sunday, January 25. The forecast winter weather mix will include “widespread heavy snow and dangerous ice,” such as sleet and freezing rain, according to an accompanying infographic.

What Areas Are Expected To Be Impacted?

Forecasters anticipate this weekend’s winter weather to slam various U.S. regions. Much of the large area between the Southern Rockies and the Northeast will likely be impacted. That area includes the Mid-Atlantic, the Plains, and the Midwest, which—along with the Northeast—are most likely to experience snow.

What Should Travelers Know About The Winter Weather Storms Forecast For This Weekend?

Since the anticipated winter weather mix will be widespread, it’s critical to stay up to date with the latest information from local sources, such as news outlets and emergency service departments. They will help you determine the most relevant course of action. Travelers should heed information from those sources in both their departure area and destination. Those planning to hit the skies should also keep an eye out for potential travel disruption updates from their carriers. If your flight is delayed or canceled, know that you have certain protections and rights.

Drivers should cancel plans to be on the roads if they can. The Weather Prediction Center noted that blanketed roads and reduced visibility “are among the primary hazards expected” where forecasters anticipate snow. Additionally, where it will be dangerously icy, the weather authority said “hazardous travel conditions, power outages, and tree damage are likely.”
