As Travel Noire previously reported, Expedia found that the best booking window is actually 31 to 45 days in advance, including international travel.
Another myth debunked in Expedia’s report is that booking flights on Tuesday night is optimal. In fact, Friday and Saturday nights are the best times to snag cheaper fares. Speaking of days of the week, avoiding peak travel days can also produce meaningful savings. Opt for traveling on Tuesdays and Wednesdays rather than on Fridays and Sundays.
The most affordable fares to Europe begin to appear after the New Year, through April, and then again in August through November as destinations embrace their low and shoulder seasons.
Embracing The Shoulder Season
Shoulder season is a traveler’s secret weapon. Defined as the period before and after a destination’s peak travel season and low season, when fares are relatively low during an optimal time to travel. It’s important to note here that shoulder season varies by destination. For Europe, April to early June usually yields lower prices and fewer crowds, then again in late August until early October.
According to the European Travel Commission, flight prices and hotel rates can be 20 to 30 percent lower during the shoulder season than in the summer months. What people usually love about shoulder season, compared to the low season, is that the weather is typically ideal for comfortable exploration, and you’re less likely to run into travel hiccups.
For example, in France, you may experience partial shutdowns at smaller businesses during August. Many residents take summer vacations, and these smaller shops are closed on Mondays (we learned the hard way).
However, for people who don’t mind braving often the colder and quieter months in Europe, November offers the deepest discounts since it’s the cheapest month to travel to Europe. Major cities such as Barcelona, Madrid, Lisbon, Rome, and Paris are experiencing their lowest air and hotel fares, according to Going.
