Cruise travelers looking for another data point before booking have a federal record they can check. A recent USA Today report highlighted the cruise ships that earned perfect sanitation inspection scores from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), using records from the agency’s Vessel Sanitation Program. The CDC publishes sanitation inspection scores tied to public health standards for ships under its jurisdiction. Those scores measure public health conditions, not luxury, entertainment, or overall guest experience. That makes the CDC database one of the clearest official tools available to travelers who want more than cruise line marketing before choosing a ship.

The inspections cover areas that directly affect passenger health, including food safety, drinking water systems, pools, childcare areas, housekeeping practices, pest management, medical facilities, and ventilation. The CDC records highlighted ships that received a perfect 100 in their most recent inspections over the past year, giving travelers a clear snapshot of sanitation performance. The agency’s public inspection search tool also allows travelers to review a ship’s score history and inspection reports directly.

How The CDC Scores Cruise Ships

The CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program conducts unannounced public health inspections on cruise ships with international itineraries that call at U.S. ports. According to the CDC, inspectors use a 100-point scale and deduct points for significant violations or repeated patterns of similar violations. A score of 85 or below is considered unsatisfactory.

The agency also says ships under its jurisdiction are generally subject to two unannounced inspections each year, although vessels that spend long periods outside the United States may be inspected less often until they return to U.S. ports. Inspection reports and scores are publicly posted, allowing travelers to check a ship’s sanitation history before they sail.

A perfect score has a specific meaning, as it means inspectors did not deduct any points during that inspection. However, it does not mean a ship is permanently free of risk or that it ranks first in every category a traveler might care about. It means the vessel met the CDC’s sanitation standards at the time of inspection without losing points.

Why These Sanitation Scores Matter To Travelers

For travelers, these scores add an independent public record to the booking process. Cruise vacations often cost more than the base fare once airfare, hotels, excursions, Wi-Fi, and onboard add-ons are factored in. Sanitation scores give travelers another concrete point of comparison before they commit to a ship. They also offer a more grounded measure than branding language since they come from an official inspection process tied to passenger health.

The CDC database is also more useful than a single roundup, as it lets travelers search records, review inspection reports, and see whether a ship earned a perfect score, a satisfactory score below 100, or an unsatisfactory one. That transparency gives travelers a better sense of how a ship performed under federal sanitation standards, especially at a time when many passengers are weighing health considerations alongside itinerary, price, and onboard amenities.

Which Cruise Ships Earned Perfect CDC Sanitation Scores

These cruise ships earned perfect CDC sanitation scores on their most recent inspections over the past year:

    1. Virgin Voyages – Brilliant Lady
    2. Carnival Cruise Line – Carnival Breeze and Carnival Luminosa
    3. Celebrity Cruises – Celebrity Apex, Celebrity Eclipse, Celebrity Silhouette, and Celebrity Solstice
    4. Disney Cruise Line – Disney Fantasy
    5. Explora Journeys – Explora I
    6. Royal Caribbean – Enchantment of the Seas, Grandeur of the Seas, Jewel of the Seas, Ovation of the Seas, and Utopia of the Seas
    7. Holland America Line – Koningsdam, Rotterdam, and Westerdam
    8. National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions – National Geographic Venture
    9. Norwegian Cruise Line – Norwegian Encore and Norwegian Gem
    10. Oceania Cruises – Oceania Allura, Oceania Insignia, and Oceania Vista
    11. Seabourn – Encore
    12. Silversea Cruises – Silver Ray
    13. Viking – Viking Neptune, Viking Orion, and Viking Polaris

Because CDC inspection records are updated on a rolling basis, travelers who want the latest information should still check the agency’s 100-score inspection report and broader inspection database before booking.
