National Cancer Survivors Day lands on June 7, and it’s more than just a calendar moment. It’s a reminder of the strength it takes to hear a diagnosis, go through treatment, deal with the fear, the side effects, the scars and the uncertainty — and still keep living, working, creating and showing up for the people who love you. The National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation defines a survivor as anyone living with a history of cancer, from the moment of diagnosis through the rest of life.

For Black people, that conversation carries even more weight. Cancer can touch anybody, but it does not hit every community the same way. The American Cancer Society notes that Black people have some of the highest cancer death rates in the country, Black women are still more likely to die from breast cancer than white women, and Black men face especially high risks around prostate cancer.

That’s why seeing Black celebrities speak openly about cancer matters. Their stories are not just about fame and survival; they can push people to schedule a screening, ask an extra question, learn their family history, or stop ignoring that symptom they’ve been brushing off. Here are some Black celebrities who have faced cancer publicly and used their journeys, in different ways, to remind people that survival is possible.
