With the summer season heating up, a recent report shared insights on what Black travelers are open to and anticipating as they jet-set and hit the road.
For those who love to travel, summer trips typically offer a chance to mix sun, sand, and whatever takes the edge off – whether that’s relaxing at a spa or dancing the night away. In a report released in late June by BLK, a dating app for Black singles, the company found that participants are maintaining similar vibes for Summer 2026. In addition to those surveyed mentioning several beachy destinations as where they’re planning to visit this summer, 52% said their main reason for traveling this season is to “relax/[get] peace of mind.”
Short trips are favored by those surveyed, with 30.9% saying a “weekend getaway” is the type of summer travel that feels most realistic for them this year. A notable 14.8% said a road trip was most practical, and another 14% said it’d be an international trip for them. While 27.7% said nothing is stopping them from traveling the way they want to this summer, the combined number of those who noted a financial barrier was ultimately higher. Airfare costs (18.8%), hotel rates (9.3%), and gas prices (9.1%) were all among the cited hindrances.
Where Black Travelers Are Headed And Who They’re Open To Meeting
BLK’s 2026 Black Summer Travel Report surveyed over 1,000 Black travelers. Based on participants’ open-text responses, popular hubs where the Black diaspora lives and/or vacations were identified as among the top places Black travelers plan to visit this summer. The top domestic destinations mentioned by participants were Las Vegas, Miami, New York, Chicago, and Atlanta. New Orleans and Houston ranked sixth and eighth, respectively, within that list’s top ten. And regarding international travel hotspots, participants name-dropped Jamaica, Nigeria, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, and Paris. Additional destinations abroad that Black travelers said they’re planning to visit were Mexico, Toronto, Aruba, the Dominican Republic, and Italy.
While 35.6% of those surveyed said they’re most likely to travel solo this summer, 20.4% said they’ll likely go with a partner or someone that they’re dating. Interestingly, 70.5% of participants said that traveling makes them somewhat or completely more open to meeting a new potential connection than when they’re home.
More specifically, 78% of Black travelers said they’re open to a summer fling, such as a vacation hookup or a casual romance. In fact, nearly half of those surveyed (43%) said they would definitely have a rendezvous during their summer travel, as “that’s part of the fun.”
“Summer 2026 finds Black America traveling to rest first and connect second,” according to BLK’s 2026 Black Summer Travel Report. “They are going solo but staying open, choosing weekend getaways and Caribbean escapes, and treating every new city as a fresh chance to meet someone, with 78% open to a fling, 80% open to long distance, and the overwhelming majority ready to open the app before they land. Rest is the reason; romance is the bonus.”
