The deal between Anthony’s prior legal team and prosecutors limited the teen to a 10-minute decision to decide if he wanted to testify in his trial, plus character details about the Metcalfs prior allegations of racism and bullying being left out of the trial.

In the weeks following Karmelo Anthony‘s trial and sentencing, not only has a new legal team stepped up to represent him, but more information about his original trial is being revealed.

According to Lee Merritt, a new post-trial judge has been named to preside over the proceedings in Senior Judge Sid L. Harle. Harle will hear the motion to recuse the original trial judge, John Roach and discuss how post-trial proceedings should proceed.

As Anthony’s legal team moves to have Roach recused, new court documents related to the trial have been revealed, showing that Anthony’s legal team had only 10 minutes to decide whether he would take the stand in his defense after prosecutors walked back a handshake deal with his original lawyer, Mike Howard. The deal, per court documents, would have limited the scope of the trial to the events of April 2 and excluded character statements regarding Austin Metcalf and his twin brother and prior accusations of racism and bullying from the two teens.

Additionally, the jury did not hear about Anthony’s disciplinary record in high school or learn the contents of Anthony’s cellphone records due to the deal, which the defense heavily relied upon during the trial, according to KXAS.

“Ultimately, Mr. Anthony chose not to testify,” Howard wrote. “This 180-degree change in the defense strategy was the direct consequence of the breach of the agreement.”

In a motion filed earlier this month, Anthony’s new legal team argued that his Sixth Amendment rights were violated during the trial, a notion that the Collin County District Attorney’s Office denies.

“The entire prosecution team conducted this trial ethically and in full compliance with the court’s rulings,” the DA office wrote in a statement to local outlet FOX 4. “We remain confident in that verdict and the fairness of the proceedings.”

Anthony was found guilty of murder in June in the stabbing death of Metcalf in April 2025. He was sentenced to 35 years in prison.
