The deaths of the service members are the first since an early truce was initiated between the two countries in early April.
Two U.S. service members were killed, and a third has been reported missing following an Iranian attack on a base in Jordan on Friday.
The U.S. military said the deaths were the first of U.S. troops since a truce was agreed upon between the U.S. and Iran in April. According to U.S. Central Command, four servicemembers were evacuated to Jordanian hospitals and have been discharged since the attack. Other individuals who were evaluated for minor injuries have since returned to duty.
“Out of respect for the families, CENTCOM will withhold additional information, including the identities of the fallen warriors, until 24 hours after the next of kin have been notified,” Central Command wrote on Twitter.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said that the death of the servicemembers would strengthen the U.S.’s resolve in the war, which has dragged on since March despite dozens of declarations from President Trump that a ceasefire between the two countries would be agreed upon. In a statement shared on social media, Hegseth acknowledged the individuals as “heroes.”
In total, 16 U.S. servicemembers have been killed in the conflict.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed responsibility for the attack, days after a public memorial service for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a strike by U.S. forces on February 28. The IRGC claimed that in the attack, it had destroyed several aircraft, which were conducted using drones and missiles.
The latest deaths are adding to terse conversations between U.S. and Iranian diplomats as a ceasefire between the two countries once again reached an impasse earlier this week, and 12 Iranians were killed, bringing the countries’ total number of deceased since the war began to 50.
