In a distressing incident at a Florida apartment complex, deputies responding to a disturbance call fatally entered the wrong unit and shot Senior Airman Roger Fortson, a Black U.S. Air Force airman, upon seeing him armed. This grave error occurred on May 3, in Fort Walton Beach, where Fortson resided in his off-base apartment.

    What We Know:

    • The shooting transpired when deputies, aiming to address a disturbance at the apartment complex, mistakenly burst into Fortson’s apartment.
    • Civil rights attorney Ben Crump disclosed that Fortson was on a Facetime call and not causing any disturbance at the time of the deputies’ wrongful entry.
    • According to the woman on the call with Fortson, after unresponsive knocking at his door, Fortson retrieved his legally owned gun for protection.
    • Upon walking back through his living room, deputies saw Fortson armed and shot him six times. Fortson was reportedly saying, “I can’t breathe,” after being shot.
    • Fortson later died from his injuries at a hospital, and the deputy involved has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.
    • The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office has defended the deputy’s action as self-defense, though details about the disturbance call and the deputies involved were not provided.

This tragic event raises serious concerns about the accuracy of police operations and the quick escalation to lethal force, highlighting ongoing issues regarding law enforcement’s interactions with Black communities. There is a growing demand for transparency and accountability, with calls for the immediate release of body cam footage to shed light on the circumstances leading to this fatal mistake.
